SAN DIEGO – The attack submarine Hampton arrived at its new Point Loma Naval Base home at noon Monday following a seven-month deployment to the western Pacific Ocean.
The submarine left its former home port of Norfolk, Va., in February, under the command of Cmdr. Mike Portland.

During the cruise, its 149-member crew participated in two major exercises and one 7th Fleet operation. The ship also made port visits to Okinawa and Yokosuka, Japan; Brisbane, Australia; Hawaii and Guam, according to a news release from the Navy's Submarine Squadron 11.

Many family members who had recently moved from Virginia greeted the ship as it docked at Point Loma. Four Hampton crew members who had become fathers during the deployment met their new babies.

The Hampton becomes the fifth Los Angeles-class submarine to be homeported in San Diego, joining the Helena, Asheville, Jefferson City and Topeka.

Two others, the Albuquerque and the San Francisco, are scheduled to move here in 2008 and 2009, respectively, as part of a Navy plan to shift more of its fleet from Atlantic to Pacific ports, said Lt. Alli Myrick, a Submarine Squadron 11 spokeswoman.
