Call for sub experts Down Under

Call for sub experts to go Down Under
    Published on 14/06/2007

AUSTRALIANS are bidding to lure Barrow’s top submarine experts Down Under — for a second time.

A new recruitment drive by the Australian Submarine Company is under way.

An advert was placed in the Evening Mail targeting Barrow’s submarine experts and inviting them to “come to Australia”.

The move is a repeat of tactics used by ASC in 2004 when they placed a similar advert.

On that occasion it was timed to coincide with the week when amphibious landing ship Bulwark departed Barrow.

This time the recruitment drive follows the successful rollout on Friday of Astute — BAE’s latest hi-tech vessel.

And it could tempt away those among Barrow’s shipyard workforce who feel they face an uncertain future.

Based in Adelaide, ASC plans to attract Barrow’s wealth of submarine specialists, including engineers and designers.

An ASC spokesperson said: “We require highly experienced submarine specialists in a number of areas, including design, project management and production.

“With its highly experienced and capable workforce, Barrow has provided a number of excellent employees in the past and ASC will look to continue this successful association into the future.

“We have had a number of Barrow workers join us since 2004, all of them still with the company and making significant contributions. We have been impressed not only with their skills and capabilities, but also the way they have grasped their new opportunity.”

Terry Waiting, Chairman of campaigning lobby organisation, Keep our Future Afloat, said he believed the shipyard was ready to defend its workforce from would-be poachers.

He said: “We would not want to lose any of our designers or engineers.

“The shipyard is doing everything it can at the moment to keep its staff excited and motivated.”

The large advert first appeared in the Evening Mail on the eve of the Astute launch.

It invites our top submarine builders and designers to “spend a few years, or the rest of your career,” in Adelaide or Perth.

And suitable candidates are tempted to relocate to Oz with its “beautiful landscape, sea breezes and lifestyle”.

Councillor Bill Joughin, Barrow’s council leader, said: “Barrow cannot afford to lose its submarine experts as it’s a matter of national defence.

“I would like to see the government give assurances that it will place orders for more submarines with BAE so the future can be secured as it’s essential for Barrow to hold on to its skilled workers.

“But I don’t blame the Australians for trying to poach Barrow’s yard workers because they are experts.”

BAE declined to comment saying it was not its policy to comment, on the recruitment strategies of other companies.

ASC has been servicing a healthy order book ever since the Australian Navy recently concentrated on placing orders in its own country.

The closing date for applicants to ASC’s jobs is June 24, with interviews held in July.
