Local author Dianne Brady autographed copies of her first novel, "Why the Wind Blows," at a book signing Saturday at Aiken Office Supply.
"It's a faith-strengthening book," Brady told shopper Becky Magee, for whom she signed two copies, one of Magee's own and one as a gift for her brother.
Brady spent two hours at the bookstore meeting readers, discussing the book and signing copies for customers.
The book, which Brady co-authored with David Stallworth, is a fictionalized account of the history of the Confederate proto-submarine Hunley, starting with its raising off the bottom of Charleston Bay in 2000 and working back to its designing.
Woven in with the epic, multi-generational tale of those connected to the Hunley are theological themes of creationism, according to Brady.
"People are fascinated by the Hunley," she said.
"The Hunley draws people in to the book, and they get so much revelation of scientific facts that are little known. After they read it, they want to buy additional copies for loved ones and friends."
"Why the Wind Blows" has a cover price of $19.95, and copies are available at Aiken Office Supply.
The bookstore will host a second book signing later this week. W. Cothran "Cot" Campbell, owner of Dogwood Stables, will be on hand to sign copies of his latest book, "Memoirs of a Longshot... A Riproarious Life," from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Aiken Office Supply.
Refreshments will be served at Thursday afternoon's event.
The memoir is Campbell's third book, following "Lightning In a Jar: Catching Racing Fever" and "Rascals and Racehorses: A Sporting Man's Life." "Longshot" has a cover price of $28, and all three of Campbell's books are on sale at Aiken Office Supply.
