10-foot yellow submarine reported missing is found

A 7,000-pound yellow submarine reported missing from the Santa Cruz Mountains has been found.

Kevin Deetz came to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday morning and told deputies he had the submarine, a sheriff's detective said.

Felton resident Carl Barker reported the 10-foot-long submarine missing last Thursday.

Former Felton resident Irven Thomson and friends built the vessel in the 1940s out of a propane tank with the intention of patrolling Monterey Bay, Deetz said. But after a few launches off the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, the submarine was dry-docked on Thomson's property in Felton.

When the Thomson family sold his property four years ago, Thomson's grandson gave the submarine to Deetz, a local artist and lifelong Santa Cruz County resident. However, Deetz didn't have anyplace to store it and neighbor Barker told the family he would keep it on his land.

Using a tow truck to hoist the sub onto a flatbed truck, Deetz retrieved the vessel so he could restore it, he said.

Sheriff's deputies set up a meeting between Deetz and Barker this morning to resolve the misunderstanding.

``Now that it's someone who's into the history of it and fixing it up, I'm fine with it,'' Barker said.
