Review of "Beneath Southern Seas" - 6 week camera crew on board Rankin.

I recently bought a copy of the newly published book"Beneath Southern Seas" This book accompanies the TV series in which a film crew from SBS Australia went on board the Collins class Submarine HMAS Rankin for 6 weeks and followed the goings on of the boat and crew during this time.

The book is lavish with fantastic colour photographs and although is very thin on technical detail (there is next to none) it gives a very personal account of life on board these boats. The text is simply the words of the crew and their impressions and feelings about life on board.

The book and the TV series is to some extent an attempt by the navy to give the Collins good publicity in the light of a bad and undeserved stigma.

I'm thinking of submitting a further review of this book for the SCR

    regards.

    David hughes.
