I've picked up a copy of James Calvert's "Surface at the Pole" in the form of a ratty old third hand paperback several years ago. Upon reading it I was really taken by the story and came to admire Calvert's mix of faith in his career as a fighting submariner.
So I saw a hard cover copy of the book on eBay listed for $0.01 recently. I placed a max bid of $1.00 and wound up winning it. The book showed up yesterday and looks good.
The thought crossed my mind about trying to get it to Calvert for him to sign it -- I believe he's still alive. Then I opened up the cover. Low and behold the Admiral had already done so back in 1972. Pretty neat!
