We picked this up in a used books store [along with its companion volume on Destroyers] 20-odd years ago. It was written for the US Naval Institute by Theodore Roscoe and others back in 1949 and in print until at least 1958 and is the 'Official Record' of US sub. ops. in WW-II.
It is a massive hardback the size of a metro phone book with 600 odd pages, a couple of hundred drawings and photos and numerous fold out maps. It describes all of the significant operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific and makes for fascinating reading. Detailed appendixes list the kill record of every sub that had one, tonnage sunk, etc. It is weak on technology, concentrating on operations. If you ever see one on ebay or hunt abe or other used book sources, get one. Lou
