  • Micromer USS Skate 1/350

    Hi,

I recently received this kit and had a couple questions. First, the planes that mount the propellers are straight, shouldn't they have a bend angle outwards? Are there any good photos of the aft part of a Skate class boat?

Second, the instructions call for a black upper and red lower hull. Is that correct? Shouldn't the Skates be black all over?

    Thanks for any help.

Here's a Navy photo of the Grayback and the Sargo on the left.

I have not found a color photo of any boat in class showing below the waterline.
There are models which show the red bottom but not actual boats.

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't see the picture you posted, but I looked again at the picture I think you referenced.

It shows aft of the Greyback in drydock. I missed the Sargo on the left the first time. It does answer my one question about the prop mounts.

      Thanks again,

What I find interesting is the Grayback does not have the propeller shaft shrouds installed.
        The Sargo does.

          Here's an old build thread.

Not sure if the boat was completed.

            Art,
The Skate class boats were red below the waterline as built and were changed to all black about 1970 when the west coast yards had to change paint formulations to comply with California law. This change was also done at Pearl Harbor nav yard.
Ralph the boat in the build thread you referenced has not been completed
Art if you are building a specific boat during a specific period of time and need info on it PM me as I have a large amount of data on the class and the various external changes through the years.
            Bob.

Here's some good stern shots of the propellers and mounts. Unlike Nautilus, the Skate class propeller shrouds do not cover the outboard propeller area.
