To bollard, or not to bollard ...

Still working on the Revell Germany 1/144 Type VIIC! I notice many reference drawings show four sets of bollards on deck, but period pics are somewhat sketchy; most seem to show no bollards. The kit does not include them, so I'm wondering if they were removeable when underway. Any thoughts?

The bollards are retractable...so underway

The bollards are retractable...so underway they would be lowered to be flush with the deck.
