    /1228 Aurora SSN Skipjack questions

I just got one of these vintage styrene kits on ebay, complete with the Photoa-Scope feature. I'd like to do a halfway decent buildup of the kit. My question is, did this sub have any tiled surface detail? The photo of a buildup in the instructions seems to hint at it, but I can't tell if it's supposed to be tiles, or just welded hull plates, particularly at this small scale (about 10" long overall.)

Any comments, hints, or suggestions, or info on the old SSN class, would be most appreciated as I do not have a library of sub reference material (I love subs, but am more into undersea habitats...)

Thanks in advance for any help.

    No, the Skipjack class never

No, the Skipjack class never got anechoic tiles. Those were installed starting on the LA class, and now have moved onto more advanced hull treatments.

The Skipjack class kit has a fair number of mistakes; the worse being a 3 bladed propeller, which should be either 5 (as built) or 7 bladed as later installed. There is a replacement version from Matt Stein Models. The sail shape has some problems, and Ken Hart, the very first SubCommittee President, wrote a very extensive article in an early SCR on fixing this kit, and includes very helpful drawings of the Skipjack. His approach is quite comprehensive, and may be more than you want to take on.

Tom thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Is there any way for me to identify and purchase the back issue that has the article on doing the Skipjack?

          I have some photos here

I have some photos here of some of Merriman's templates he has just made to scribe up and paint the Revell Skipjack.

I should have a few more next week as He is finishing off a bunch of models this weekend.
