Building from scratch - USS Blueback Model

I looking to build a model of the USS Blueback from scratch, any suggestions on what material to use? Is Resin the best to use? I'm a beginner, so this will be fun. I'm working on a clay model right now, and planning on making a mold. I have the experience neccessary for the mold making, just not for model making. My mold will be made of plaster, how well does resin work with plaster? Thank you any help you can give me.
