U-96 of Das Boot

Hey guys,

Here's my latest build, the U-96 used in the movie, Das Boot. Notice the removal of the signal lights on the conning tower and the lack of the large insulator foward of the tower. It also had a wind deflector, breakwaters and a net cutter as well as it's own free-flood vent pattern.

I'm having problems uploading pics to my site, so I have had to upload them to another site.

Explore uboatmodels’s 21 photos on Flickr!

You can see the progress of the build on my site:

Indeed some excellent work. This sort of thing I am replicating (or trying to) on my otw 1/32nd boat.
I have a picture of U96 in a book (will scan it soon) that shows that the nav lights were on the conning tower but minus the conical shrouds above - yours is correct for the film though!
The insulator is correctly absent.
Also, in the picture that I have, the conning tower sports a swordfish emblem on the right and snorting bull photo on the left hand side of the tower.

Paul.

I have the same pics.

I have the same pics. However, mine was a commission build to replicate the boat used in the movie, not the real U96.

Thanks and Take Care,

Jess

Hi Jess,
yes, I have a few pictures knocking about, some on this forum, some on subpirates]http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/8375/railings3fa.jpg[/img]
Here are the rails for the deck by the side of the conning tower.

And the crew I have painted (Andrea Miniatures 1/32nd scale)
All the others, I think you will have seen on the webpage - so I'd better take some more!

Paul.

Wonderful work Jess! I am at the point of painting my boat. I am dead in the water with figuring out what the colors are the instructions are calling for. I can't find any reference to the color names or numbers mentioned.

Can you help me out with the Das Boot and U-552 versions?

Thanks

Gorden

Hi Gorden,

Hi Gorden,
I use WEM's Kriegsmarine colourcoats. On the Das Boot boat, I used Hellgrau 50 for the CT and upper hull, Schlickgrau 58 for the splashguard and wind deflector, and Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau for the lower hull. For U-552 I used Baltic Hellgrau for the CT and upper hull and Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau for the lower hull.

An excellent resource on U-boat colors, cammo and weathering is an article written by Dougie Martindale. You can find it and his other article on free flood vent patterns and exhaust patterns at]http://www.rocketcopy.biz/models/rokket/uboat/ubrass.shtml

Both are a must read for any u-boat modeler and enthusiast.

Hope this helps.

Take Care,
