Flood Ports - Info rquired on TypeVII flood ports

I'm wondering about the mechanism by which the Type VIIs flooded the MBTs. Both Jeff LaRue and I agree that the ports had doors but we don't have any pix showing the doors in the open position.
Anybody out there who might shed some light on this?
I'm currently building a 1/72 U-552 and I want to understand as much as I can about how the boat functioned so I can build it as true to life as possible.

    You might want to look

You might want to look at the great article by Don Prince in the March 2005 Report to get some ideas on the problem. It looks to me like the intake of water into the b/ts was controlled by valves in the bottom of the tanks.

      Check out my -995 gallery

Check out my [U]-995 gallery http://album.zoom.nl/user/KOEZE/U-995/ . It has high res closeups of the ballast tank flood valves. They're closed but you may be able to see how they worked. I believe the recess in the keel allowed them to hinge.

On this photo you can see the hinges quite clearly.

                      ...whether or not they're bolt

...whether or not they're bolt heads, I do think it is quite likley that there is some sort of grating beneath those hinged doors. It would make sense as a means to keep FOD out of the ballast tanks.

I'm surprised how rough the pressure hull appears to be. It looks more like concrete. Is this a result of it's age or did the boats roll off the docks like that when they were new ?

Fantastic photos showing this kind of detail.

Almost certainly a combination of age (pitting from rust) and possibly paint (repair/patches). When new, the steel was quite smooth.
