MPM Special Navy type XXIII - my review -

    Hi,

Just received mine today. I ran on my digital cam to share with you this tiny XXIII that will remain a dust collector on a shell (not RC conversion for me... )

Here is a bunch of pictures to introduce you the kit. The plastic parts seem ok as well as the resin parts (no complain).
The PE parts are very thin and nicely done.

About the instructions, it is short but seems enough for a quick building. The scratchbuilding remains quite rare and the building wont require high skills.

I cant say yet how the parts will fit together, it will be on the next part of the review.

    Here are the pics :

Merci Antoine, excelent material. Seeing the limber holes opened makes me wonder why Revell didn't do it with it's Type VII.

            Antoine,

Take a look at this thread my friend Darrin started. I'm getting one of these in tradefor one of my Type 17 models. He's doing a great job however you'll have to cut all those darn limber holes!

Have you noticed that the mould seems to have been modified to eliminate a couple of vents/limber holes a few centimetres from the bow?

My references for the XXIII are pretty slim but one photograph seems to show more limber holes than the model has (as does the plan in the instructions).

                Should these holes be opened?

youre right David, you will have to open few holes on the bow following the accurate drawings you may have.

                    Ok I began the job

Ok I began the job on this kit.

I have to say that I would not recommend this kit to a beginner that would like a straight-to-build model.
Nothing impossible to do though, but many parts do not fit well, no pins to align the 2 hull halves, very microscopic PE parts to handle with the greatest care, resin part flashes to be removed....etc...etc....

No complain though as this kit gives us the possibility to build a quite accurate model of the XXIII in a fair scale (much better than these 144th or 700th scales I saw)

Thanks for posting the photographs of your model - very helpful!

I have opened up the limber holes in the bow (the photograph of the parts on the side of the box has them open!). I just need to fit two spacers to the bow to take out a kink in the deck and I'll be able to join the two hull pieces.

                        Another couple of questions]

Paint them the same color as the conning tower. (light grey)..

None of the Type XXIII books that I have show the wooden strips inside the tower.
