Modeling an underwater riverine environment

I just bought the Cottage Industry's NAUTILUS built by Robert Fulton in 1805! Very neat kit in 32nd scale!

Hope to finish it before the Summer is over!
But how do I model a underwater riverine environment?
That is where Fulton demonstrated for potential buyers.
I want something more than a crude drydock scene.
Any suggestions?

You could go for

You could go for constructing a kind of shadowbox.
In the front you place a glass window wich you can paint with the various watercolours. In the box you can construct the riverine environment.
