Electronic Speed Control survey - ESC Picks and Pans

What are you using for an electronic speed control in your subs? Alternately, what have you tried that you haven't been happy with?

I have an FMA Volcano with which I have been very pleased (in my D&E WTC 3.5) and a Graupner Speed Profi 50 amp unit in my homebrew WTC in my HL Hunley. I have cheapie Traxxas'es in my Blueback and in my D&E WTC 3.0 that continue to work amazingly well $40 per copy - although low speeds are a little "iffy".

The only total bomb I have had was a Jomar Nautical Throttle that caused such horrible glitching I couldn't use it. Even after a trip back to the manufacturer, it was unusable.

Anyone else got any picks or pans?

    I purchased a "TAKPO ELECTRONICS"

I purchased a "TAKPO ELECTRONICS" or "Tak Po" (something like that) TP-M8R high frequency motor speed controller awhile back. It has reverse and is 4V-12V. I don't know how well it works as I haven't been able to try it yet. Maybe some of you know something about this speed control?

      Hi Guys, You can use

Hi Guys, You can use any good F/R ESC in a sub and it will work. But I would go the extra mile and get one that has good low speed priority. I have used the Subtech,Thor design, and MCD ESC's and am very happy with all. I have used ones without low speed priorty and have not been happy. Most of the ESC's that you buy for high speed model boats do not have this feature. They are designed for Go Go Go, and low speed is not a factor. In a low speed design your prop will go WUMP WUMP WUMP. You can see it move. Believe me this makes a big difference when operating your model. Dave.

Well Tim, I have the one you show in your picture, but I find it a bit bulky in anything smaller than 1]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_razz.gif[/img] Actually I have used a couple of my own design. One worked pretty well in a target. Another proved a little awkward to use when I tried it in my Akula. I now use the SubTech ST-10. It is really smooth. I have to agree with friend Dave; low speed priority is a must. It has to have reverse too! A built in BEC is nice, but I can get by with an external one.

I have used RET-411 by Vantec for a number of years. Extremely pleased. No relay. Smooth control.

I also like the optical coupler for potential elimination of ground loop currents.

Also good for 24 volt system which I'm about to use.

          Keep a steady bubble.

            I have a Sonik 3

I have a Sonik 3 Marine Eco currently installed on my Type
XXI. Works very well. It is rated 4.8 to 12 volts and has
forward and instant reverse. One touch setup. Availaable
from Hobby People under item number 159100 for $34.95
I also have used the Vantec RET-411 with good results
and also the Super Rooster by Novak, but the price for it
            is out of this world.

              I use the range of

I use the range of controllers made by 'model controllers'.

Excellent for sub and/or general marine use. Good at low speed, huge voltage range and good feature set (programmable throttle, BEC, thermally protected, audible signal loss alarm etc.) .

Virtually bomb proof, provided you use them sensibly.

              Compact.

              Affordable

andy the url is messed up it doesn't point to their site but a domain hoster

I have used almost everything except vantec I hear they are good but too $$$ for my money
the only ones I would stay away from are the traxxas stuff not very smooth and little low rpm control
the M sonic stuff is great novak and futaba are good too

ca all might disagree with me but the old hitech stuff in aluminum case was good too what happened to hitech any ways
