    Last of Kevin's OSCARIIs

I've had thing after thing come up so my subs have taken a back seat but hopefully now nothing major will stop me. So this is the plan so far-because it's a hull with control surfaces (and some extras) but no running gear or pressure hull, so I've decided to try and modify existing sub material. So far I have the Engel's Typhoon pressure deck that I'm going to cut to fit, the Typhoon's drive assembly (it's off by 1 inch on each prop, but I'm hoping a universal joint can overcome that), and their TAE2 dive system with tanks. I still need 2 drive shafts and 2 ESCs but those will probably be Vipers. Control will be Futaba FM and power will be NiMh 6v batteries rather then the lead acid 6v battery Engel's sent me with my typhoon kit since I'm doubtful I could fit one in after the 'deck' is cut down to fit. side note, I'm NOT using my Typhoon's parts for this project. Everything listed was ordered separately for this boat. The hull and everything that came with it is superb and I'm hopeful I can get her going.

So I'm open to any thoughts or ideas.

    Hi Southern Or

Sorry I might have missed the beginning but what do you plan to do with your Typhoon hull itself?

The Typhoon is the next project and that's a complete kit. I just ordered extra parts from that kit for the OSCAR but with smaller tanks. I have the install diagrams and wire diagrams for the Typhoon so I figured I'd adapt the Engel's parts for the Oscar in hopes that I won't need to do a whole lot of running and controlling gear scratch building. Plus if I have a component failure in one of the subs I need only go to one place, rather then try to remember where what part came from where.

Okay, bit of a oops moment. The tanks are the same size as the Typhoons so maybe I can off set that with less solid ballast. In other news I found my cutting disks and hope to begin cutting the deck to fit soon. After I complete that I'll start working on the hull's fitting and control holes. I'm not going wild with this sub so the masts are going to be permanently mounted and the forward dive planes won't be retractible. I'm not planning on running it in the ice so this won't be a problem.

I do have one question however, should I cut the drive motor housing to align properly? Right now it's to wide. I'd like to have the dry deck mocked up before I start cutting the hull halves to fit and opening up the control and intake holes.

So now that my Burke isn't on fire and ready to go I can turn my attention back to the Oscar. Bit of a problem though if I'm honest, something close to me is causing RFI on the 75mHz band so I have no way of really doing a full mockup test unless I use my 8 channel 2.4gHz. I'm worried now because the R/C pond isn't that far away, but it is 350 ft. lower.

My metric bits disappeared so after I complete my hull trimming and inlet drilling, I'm going to be stuck until the replacements arrive. This is why I don't let people use my things.

Good news! My replacement tools are almost here. I also ordered 310mm M4 prop shafts because my WTC is to far away from the rear to use Kevin's shafts. He went the route of using clear acrylic WTC and I'm modifying Engel's WTC 'deck.' I'm really excited about using a static dive system-but this will be my first.

              Any advice?

I haven't started fitting anything out yet (the parts are metric and I live in 1 of 2 countries that's never heard of base 10) so I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions as this will be my first static system-I'm tired of dynamic.

Bits arrived today so I started the massive undertaking of body work.

Alright, the aft section of the boat is almost complete which leaves the rest of the top and bottom sections to work on getting flush. My prop shafts are looking like they'll work out great so far and I'm getting a better idea of where the WTC will be going as the body work continues. My lead came in and I'm pretty sure I don't have enough, but my extra battery wires look great so hopefully soon I can do a full powered mockup. Sadly though, I'm going to be taking a bit of an unplanned brake to get over bursitis.

So today I was checking my progress and found that one of my prop housings has gone MIA from the hull so I'll be having to build another one (I'll probably do both, and out of apoxie sculpt because I have a bunch of it). I also rediscovered all the stuff I have yet to install in it-and it's a LOT. The TAE ballast system with 2 tanks, both motors, the servos, 4 battery housings, ballast, prop shafts, props, fins, dive planes, rudders (yes, more then one), conning tower and it's gear, and the WTC. Interesting thing about the prefab motor housing, it isn't wide enough so I'll need to cut it apart to have the props line up.

I'm sort of doing a mockup before I finish the aft section and glue it together. I also sort of mocked up all of the running gear.

Funny side note, I completely forgot I had a LTR6 system (with LCD display no less). So, now my sub has 2 failsafes and a depth control system.

They are, but I'm probably going to use Kevin's props. The threads on the shaft are too short for these ones, and the cap for them can't be added because of it. I went to balance one of Kevin's props and it made this terrifying noise like I was breaking it so I got 2 brass replacements just in case.

AS you can tell by the tape, I haven't bothered to clean the hull yet because I'm still doing body work and I figured that with all the dust I'm creating, there isn't any reason to scrub it yet.

It isn't necessary to have the prop shaft(s) line up with the shaft on the motor housing. Instead of trying to obtain perfect alignment, use either DuBro dog bones or miniature universals. Completely eliminates the problem and you won't ever have to worry about binding.
