    Type IXb Plans

Does anyone know of a good set of plans for a type IXb U-boat? I'd like to convert the Revell kit to a IXb (Reinhard Hardegen's U-123, specifically). I'd not feel confident doing so without a good set of drawings as a starting point for research.

I've got the Rossler book, and the Vom Original Zum Model book, but neither pays much attention to the IXb type, and the Warship Profile 8 book has nice IXb photos but no set of technical drawings.

    Re: Type IXb Plans

I can't say I've seen a(ny) good set of plans for the IXB series. I believe that most of the differences between the IXB and IXC were internal (e.g. large fuel capacity), however one change is easily visible. The IXC didn't have the 3rd control room periscope and had just two tower scopes.

There was a some minor difference in length:

    IXB - LOA = 76.5m

    IXC - LOA = 76.76m

    -hope this helps,

    Jeff

p.s. In the full sized boat that's a whole 2.36 inches difference.

      Hi,

For a correct IXb you need to reshape large parts of the hull, as the saddle tanks on the IXc go much deeper in the frame contour than on the IXb.
I found frame lines for a IXb here in the first post http://www.rc-modellbau-schiffe.de/wbb2 ... tid=272365 in the second post are some IXc frames for comparison.

The kit contains a Turm IV sail which U-123 only had on the last patrol (#12), haven't found any incidence of Turm II (possibility by dates on patrols #10 and #11), earlier patrols had the normal 1 decker sail with the 3.7cm flak behind of it and in early war there was a wave breaker in front of the deck gun and wave deflectors beside the deck gun (picture in Orignal zum Mdell book page 16).

And the third periscope, Jeff already stated.
