Vector Thrust Submarine

I recently came across an article in a German model publication about what I am calling a vector thrust submarine.
They call the model the Ironfish. Kind of a steam punk design.
The cool thing I liked was the way they apply the power to the water.
It is like a two axis outdrive or vectored thrust.
I find this system totally intriguing and have to design my own version.
Here are some photos I pulled from the PDF using the iPad snapshot function.
The one model they call the Rocket.

I have read about it recently.
It's a Brüggen design and could be on his website when he'll update the next time.

This RC kite vector module is relatively inexpensive and can be used on a sub.
The brushless motor can be used underwater.
The servo rods can be lengthened, as well.
Of course the prop would be smaller and the motor will run very cool submerged in water.

I have seen the vector kites fly and they look like fun.
The way Norbert's design works looks much easier to do though.
The article is in German but I know a little technical German and the photos kind of say it all if you know what you are looking for. BD.

The Mir submersibles have vectored thrust, although I think that's for steering only.

Also let's not forget Dave Merriman's gimballed Disney Nautilus prop.

Raf Janssens a Belgian modeller uses vectored thrust on a few of his subs, including a very agile R/C killer whale and I wouldn't be surprised if this is where Norbert got his inspiration. In the case of Raf, it looked like he adapted the old Graupner Hydrospeed units

That is indeed vectored thrust.

The thing with the two axis thrusting is you have to account for the torque of the prop as the linkages would pretzel in a heartbeat.
I believe that is what the (robot arm) type boot is for that covers the U joint.
It should allow the U joint to gimbal but keep the prop and not the tail section turning.
That is how I see it anyway. BD.
