Do most members of the subcommittee generally use the same kind of motor and battery or is there quite a variety of choices being used?

There is a very wide envelope of perfomance and prop sizes in model submarines, so it isn't a case of one size fits all.

However in addition to direct drive, you can use gearing to get the right RPM and torque range for your application.

How do you select motors? Experience, reading datasheets/reference books and asking others with the same type of boat. The latter is very reliable assuming they have a good running set-up.
