Submarine Radios, is there one out there ?

hey guys, happy new year !
After reading a lot of posts on here on what will work and what won't work for submairnes anymore, is there a ready to use radio that will work in our subs ? What is it ? My radio equip. has been sitting on the shelf for too long and one of them won't wake up anymore, my old Ace Subcommander radio and in my opinion its too old to pay to have it fixed. Besides that I wanted to get a new radio and was reading that the new ones will not work for submarines. thanks allot Jeff Jones

    Jeff,

It is getting more difficult to find new manufactured surface frequency radios. The 2.4GHz market is rapidly killing off the FM-based radios. That said, there are still a few vendors that continue to offer what we need. For example, Mikes Subworks has 75MHz radios. I've also seen Futaba 6-channel Skysport radios occasionally being listed by Tower Hobbies.

There is also the used market. A lot of air radios are being sold at bargin prices and can be re-tuned to 75MHz very inexpensively. I've bought a number of used radios off the classified section on rcgroups.com.

    -hope this helps,

    Jeff

If you like your old radio and found it did what you wanted, don't be too hasty to consign it to the dustbin. Older kit lacks the bells and whistles you find on a lot of modern radios, but tended to be based on pretty straightforward electronics, much of which was built around discrete components. What that means in practice is that they can be fixed up quite easily by someone competent, and the cost may not be extortionate, especially if you know a ex radio tech who tinkers with these things as a paying hobby.

          thanks everyone for the info.
I think i will check into getting my old radio fixed before jumping into something new. If worse comes to worse I can make surface runners out of them..... lol Jeffrey J.
