Well if that title did not get your attention nothing will.
Well in my ultimate quest for the best rescue tug I have yet another master plan.
(Cue the evil laughter)
Although my Toot 14" logging tug worked out great and is extremely maneuverable.
It kind of morphed into a pulling tug.
I want something even smaller and more maneuverable.
My answer is I hope, a 12" version of a 14' Bronc tug.
That would make the scale 1/14.
Odd scale but since I am building more for size and function it is not a problem for me.
I have always wanted to build a Bronc as I think they are so homely they are cool!
Now where most Bronc's are driven by a Z drive in the bow. (Front wheel drive)
My plan is to use another drive system I have always wanted to try, a Voith eggbeater type.
I acquired an old Graupner unit a few years ago for another project but I want to use this system in pace of the Z drive.
I also will be using a bow thruster mounted in the stern.
So I guess it will be a stern thruster.
This should give helicopter like maneuverability.
The Voith will move the tug just like the main rotor of a heli as the Voith is just like a swash plate in the way it works.
The stern thruster will work just like a tail rotor.
I will set up the radio the same way.
In a normal Voith set up two drive units are used so the boat can spin.
But using the stern thruster like a tail rotor should do the same thing.
I am in the design stage now.
I found a set of plans I like.
I plan to construct the hull similar to how the real one is made, but where 1/4" sheet steel is used I will be substituting sheet fiberglass.
Great stuff that I get from McMaster in different sizes and thicknesses.
The tug is called the Boomin Beaver! I love it!
Hopefully I have it all worked out. Time will tell. BD.
