    Last Resort Preview

Just saw this link where you can watch the complete first episode of ABC's boomer related drama "Last Resort" online and legally before it premiers on September 27: http://tv.yahoo.com/blogs/fall-tv/ex...061122041.html.

Is it just me or does anyone else think "one-star Club Med" when you hear the title of the show?
    Warm regards,

Sorry Paul I watched it like 8 times and I didn't even see one submarine. Insert joke about torpedoes here...

Seriously another rogue "boomer" drama? That old chestnut again.
Been there, done that ...Can't happen.

Still it will probably be fun to watch from a Sci-Fi perspective. Or as a drinking game, like whenever anyone says "Aye aye" or salutes inside or something.

That's it exactly, Tom! Too funny. Although I don't associate Roger Corman with comedy.

I may watch it to see how they simulate the sub stuff. And I like Andre Braugher as an actor. But I don't have a lot of faith in the premise either. Still, when was the last time a TV show was centered around a submarine (a few episodes of "Lost" doesn't count)?

The Silent Service? Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea?

Yeah, I'm not too thrilled with the Rogue Submarine aspect, either. I understand that the submarine in question "secedes" from the US and declares itself its own "nation". I think a lot of television writers think that because a submarine is nuclear powered, it can go on indefinitely. Doesn't need spare parts, periodic overhaul, lube oil, replenishment, not to mention crew needs for food, family matters, etc. Of course, this is American television.

You could build a really decent weekly show about a submarine doing Special Operations during the Cold War. Weave in a bit of 1970-1980's Cold War history as well.

Don't forget toilet paper!!! You cannot live in a boat without toilet paper!!! Even machinery wiping towels with the mesh removed is NOT a good substitute!!!!!!!!!!!

          Lived it!

SeaQuest DSV was the last show of significance that featured a boat that I can recall. Liked "Operation Petticoat" when it was on TV. Of course I was a kid at the time...

Haven't seen the preview. Won't. Read a review and it sounded too silly even as "Rotten Tomato"-type entertainment. (I've got Voyage DVDs for that!) Apparently, it IS "Lost" set on a submarine. Which I didn't/wouldn't watch either—and there's already remake? And with elements of "Lord of the Flies," according to the reviewer. I hated that one in high school, didn't you? Anyway, I gots boats to build and SCR's to labor on. Prediction: it won't make it past a first season...

But Bill, this is television! No one takes a dump on television! This is a sacred American tradition going back to Ozzie & Harriet, the Cleavers, and the Ricardos. Why, did Little Joe or Hoss ever use the Ponderosa facilities on Bonanza? No! My Three Sons never sullied the sewage system of their hometown!

Best comment I've seen on this new series is over on the Ron Martini's Submarine World Network:
"Wow! Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea with chicks! That is really accurate and realistic! "

LOL! I saw a promo about the show and they were saying the stories will have the crew spending a lot of time on land in order to give them something to do. They're filming in Maui I believe. Tough duty!

I watched this. Very good, but I wonder how realistic the scenario are. The visuals are very nice and the acting ain't half bad. The setting reminds me of Lost.

Well, Bill Lambing (see comments above) served on a Sturgeon (Trepang), and as you can see, he is extremely worried about the continuing resupply issues that I raised. No sh*t!

Seriously, a nuclear submarine needs a tremendous amount of support to continue operations for any time period beyong a normal 70-80 day patrol. The idea that a sub could declare itself a sovereign nuclear nation and continue to function beyond a 3-4 month period is pretty far out. Equipment needs continual specialized maintainance, replacement parts etc. that would limit any such effort to fail.

Of course if the series is like Lost, then you can move the Island and travel in time. Once you allow those possibilities, well then anything goes!

I got a great laugh out of Bill's response! It sounds like there has been some 'experimentation' going on at times on the boats...Hilarious!

It is not generally appreciated that the Naval Nuclear Reactors group was also responsible for developing Charmin Ultra Soft Bath Tissue. This was only available aft of Frame 57. Forward was 100 grit sandpaper.
