Well that would be getting a modification then. Sounds like a very dodgy way of doing things, you only have to shout 'hot' at ABS to get it it to warp or melt.
You could make a simple connecting piece by soldering two wheel collars onto a piece of tube, then push each hydroplane in from either side, that allows adjustment and easy to strip down for maintenance.
When I built it as my first sub my knowledge of such things was limited and as such I stuck to the instruction religiously. You would need to beef up the area if you were to split them out, since the abs is thin, flexible, and quick to melt as shown.
