D&E/Revell Skipjack

Anyone do one of these using the D & E conversion kit? I'm starting one this weekend. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

I have not, but will be watching your build. It looks like a fun sub!
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Re: D&E/Revell Skipjack

You mean the Revell Skipjack? The one that is only 13 inches long?

Sorry, I don't build subs that are under 20 inches, but do watch out, the skipjack in original form is not accurate, the bow and the stern need to be replaced.

Take at peek at some of the cabal reports there is one for the skipjack, and also take a look at the Caswell forum, I'm sure there is something for the skipjack.

Please post your build here!

Mobious Models makes a 40 inch Skipjack.
In case one misses it, It is the first thing that comes up on Caswell's site when you go to the R/C link, or most distributers of quality models.
There is also a R/C conversion,on the same site, for those who don't want to to build a conversion from scratch.
All challanges solved.

Depends on what scale you're after. if want a tiny skipjack, this is the only way of getting one beyond scratchbuilding.

There's loads wrong with the little Revell kit, but Dave made new parts to deal with all the corrections needed which are supplied with the conversion kit. The nose is modified using polyester filler and a scree tool, and a new resin cast tail is supplied.

Hint; you should electroplate the white metal prop with nickel, bronze, etc, so it will be much resistant to damage.

Since you already have the kit, you should take a look a cabal report #12. This report talks about the skipjack's WTC and has loads of pictures. There is more in that report, it is not just about the skipjack, but also about the development of other subs too, you know.

http://support.caswellplating.com/index ... 2-jan-2012

Also post your build here and on the Caswell forum too. David and Mike are always on their forum and from what I remember, their names are "He who shall not be named".

Hope the report helps you some.

Re: D&E/Revell Skipjack

Buy the electroplating stuff from Caswell, they are experts in that field too.

I've never electroplated before, but you can ask a question on the Caswell metal finishing forum. They have great service. Check them out.

From what I remember, the "Plug N' Plate" system is what you should use.

I've not looked at the D&E metal prop but the 1/96 Permit prop I run is white metal and it has lasted me 10 seasons of running without incident. It is not electroplated -- just some epoxy primer and Testor's gold paint.

Re: D&E/Revell Skipjack

While Electroplating will greatly improve the appearance of a white metal prop, the plating is so thin that I have a very hard time understanding how it can make the prop much tougher. The plating is only a couple thousands of an inch thick at best.

Re: D&E/Revell Skipjack

Hi,

Though it is very thin, it does work. I didn't come up with this idea. It was recommended by David/Mike to do this.

All of my props I make myself are made of brass (I am exploring the idea of using stainless steel to make the prop as well).

All the best

I've use white metal props for many, many years. Never broken a single prop. I'll stick with the primer and paint. Much less costly for the tiny benefit you may gain.

I agree with what Paul and Matt have stated. A good primer and color coat is more than sufficient. Don't create complications where none are needed.
