Hand rails on Type VII hulls

Jeff,
Could you tell me if the hand rails on each side of the hull on the Type VII`s beside and forward of the c/t were removeable.And if they were,did the crews remove them when on patrol.

I've never seen any evidence that they were removable. However I have seen photos where the wire cables that span the forward and aft rail sections have been removed.
