Yes, the SL-8 can be used with either 72MHz or 75MHz transmitters. It's as simple as programming with the desired channel with the plug-in programmer and dialing a few knobs.

      Thanks, Jeff

I gotta love this stuff, it is great.

I like the 10 channel Futaba radio I mentioned earlier, hopefully I could get it in 72 MHz and convert it to 75MHz. There is a 2.4 GHz version of it.
I will also hook up two other 9 channels radios, if I could.

Anything more than 8-channels usually ties you to the apron strings of the manufacturer when it comes to receivers. They get the extra channels by moving beyond the PPM standard, and the ways of doing so are proprietary. The receivers with extra channels are usually far more expensive than your avergae 8-channel type, so be sure you want/need those extra channels.

You are right about that Andy.
I think it is just the Cool! factor or bragging rights.
My MC4000 is a 12CH radio but I need the Multiplex 12CH R/X to do it.
I rarely use more than 5 on my subs.
For a scale boat that has a lot of bells and whistles it would be usefull.
My Turtle has the most functions I ever used in a sub and it has only 6.

Still it is kind of cool to be able to say my radio has 12CH right Jeff!! BD.

            All right,

I need the extra channels because on the boat I'm going to buy, which is ether the Engel Gato or IXD2, there are a lot of extras to run. I don't know anything about a switch module that is in 75 MHz. Things like a retracting bow plane mechanism need a channel to open and another to operate. I'm thinking about lights, so there you go, the need for another channel.

I just went on the Engel site in Germany and they seem to be selling 40 MHZ radios with their subs. Will this work?

                Re: Radios for Engel subs

40 MHZ will work very well for model subs.
But not in the USA if that is where you will be running it.
It is 75 or 50 MHZ only here.
And you will need a licence for 50 as it is a Ham band.
27 MHZ is also good but only available in AM not FM as far as I know. BD.

                  Re: Radios for Engel subs

27mhz FM sets were produced. Futaba M-series and some of the Fleet (old UK based RC manufacturer) range were both FM based for improved interference rejection.

All these sets are long since out of production however.

                    Re: Radios for Engel subs

50/53 MHz will not work for me. I don't know anything about the transmitters that are associated with them.

I do know of a 27 MHz AM radio set, but it only has for channels. That will not work for me. It looks like I will need to buy a 72 MHz set and convert it to 75 MHz.

So far Tony hasn't answered me.

There was another topic about this, and someone mentioned that you could possibly get the manufacturer to convert the radio themselves. Interesting...

I'm not going to violate the FCC by using a 40 MHz set. That is plain stupid. That's a one-way ticket to jail, fines, court, etc. I shouldn't mention the rest.

Too bad Tony couldn't convert 40 MHz to 75 MHz.

                      Re: Radios for Engel subs

Is the only radio that has twin sticks or can be converted to twin sticks (simply by exchanging the single stick to twin sticks) the Robbe Futaba F14 (both versions) and the Robbe Futaba FC-16 Boat+Truck? I just want to know.

I don't want to send my radio in to someone for them to convert it. If it can be converted (like the FC-16 Boat+Truck), I want to be able to do it myself.

                      Thanks.

                        Re: Radios for Engel subs

Here is an inexpensive Graupner computerized 40MHz radio that can be converted to a 75MHz transmitter. MC-12 R/C Computer System 40 MHz 4725 117,61 € = $146.50 less shipping from Alexander Engel in Germany. No tax, though.
You may be able to retrofit the Robbe Twin Stick into the case.

                          Re: Radios for Engel subs

Interesting, but there is no hint on that web page about the possibility of it being converted to 75 MHz.

I am currently bidding on the Futaba 9 CAP on Ebay. Looks like I may not need it but thanks for your input.

Radio South can convert the Graupner MC-12 to 75MHz.
Any 40MHz transmitter can be converted to 75MHz.
You just give him the transmitter module and receiver and he can convert it.
You can also have a 2.4 GHz transmitter installed in the same case.
