I too have used a fairly wide variety of ESC's over the years (first sub 1979 or '80) , both in surface ship models and in my submarines. I believe that Captain Andre is right on the money regarding Vantec speed controllers. They are as close to bullet proof as you will find...anywhere. The only way they could be more rugged would be if they were built out of cast iron and porcelain. They just don't seem to fail, are very easy to set up, and very competitive in terms of cost.

Vantec has been around for many years and builds great products but do they make brushless motor ESCs ?
Their ESCs are on the large size of boards.
I use Castle Hydra 120 amp ESCs with an eFlite 245kv brushless motors.
They are small and water-cooled.

Brushless has it's advantages, but unless the speed controllers and motors are sensor based they still don't give the same finesse of speed control that a good quality brushed motor and ESC combination does.

The other issue has been the lack of very low (e.g. 500kv and under) RPM brushless motors in smaller can sizes. This has been partially rectified by Robbe who recently released two new 35mm diameter outrunners with 300kv and 500kv respectively.

I purchased two Mtronics Sub10 ESC's, does anyone know of a way to DISABLE the BEC on this ESC? I know it is "external," would it be as simple as cutting the wires?

I believe that you simply need to remove the plus "+" wire from the receiver connector. The instructions usually explain that for the Mtroniks ESCs.....?

As long as you use a speed controller that can be programmed , the brushless motor will start without cogging and have a controlled limit for forward and reverse speeds.
A good quality outrunner can be used.
Alexander Engel has some very good combos.
