    Scratch-built 1/96 SSN-774 Virginia

    Hi, all!

New member here - we're a father-son team of model shipbuilders who live near the site of John Holland's first submarine base, in New Suffolk, NY.

We recently spent the month of November converting a PVC sewer pipe into a 1/96 replica of USS Virginia. On the day after Thanksgiving, with her paint still wet, we gave her a shakedown cruise in the very waters that Holland tested his Holland IV submarine - the waters of Peconic Bay. She's a dynamic-diver, driven by a 9.6v electric motor with reduction belt drive, and measures 48" in length.

Below, please find video of her shakedown cruise (top) and a longer, in-depth video detailing her construction (bottom).

Hope you enjoy! After so many years seeing the Submariners Memorial practically across the street from us, it's nice to finally be a member of this board.

... and, after we found some fresh water, we tried some EMBT blow action!

VA really tears out of the water at flank speed with some up-bubble.

        Michael & Willie,

Very nicely done! Would you consider submitting a build article for the SubCommittee Report? We are always interested in learning about how folks go about designing and building their r/c submarines!

        -many thanks,

Jeff (managing editor, the SubCommittee Report)

raalst, thanks for the compliment! We're happy to have found some folks who enjoy the hobby as much as we!

Jeff, what an honor to be asked. Thank you! I've put the question to my father, who was responsible for greater than 95% of Virginia's construction (I'm the cinematographer, editor, internet-guy, etc. half of the team; Willie does most of the model-making). We'd love to write an article - could you give us an idea for an ideal word count?

Thanks again to you both for your comments!

            Michael.

            Excellent!

As to word count, there isn't any specific minimum or maximum....especially since moving the SCR to an electronic format. We are now able to size the SCR to the articles and not the other way around. Aside from that, the 'requirements' are minimal: Word document is the preferred text file format, photos sent as individual files (color and as high a resolution as available). Photo captions and photo placement a plus, but not required...though it makes our job easier if you can tell us where the photos are to go within the body of the text and what the photos are.

Any questions, please let me know!

            -tnx,

            Jeff

I am curious what type of film equipment you are using, and how you get the slow motion that
makes the model appear to move like the full size boats.

                Jeff,

Thank you for the guidelines! I'll pass along these details to my counterpart and get back to you! Sorry for the delay in this reply, and the probable delay in delivering an article: we're only a two-man operation, and are already preparing for our next shoot, so the shipyard is once again buzzing with activity.

                Scott,

For the underwater shots, we use a GoPro Hero HD in a waterproof casing that can withstand cold temps and 100ft depths - both available directly from GoPro.

For the high-speed photography that allows us to capture that extreme slow-motion effect, we use a Casio Exilim FC-150 camera, which can shoot as high as 1000 frames every second. We then adjust the playback speed accordingly using editing software (iMovie, nothing professional).

Both of those cameras can be found in the $180-$225 price range these days; we're not using hugely expensive equipment or anything like that. There's a little more detail on the cameras we use on our Cameras page here: http://www.rapidnadion.com/the-cameras.html

                Hope that helps!

                  Jeff,

We're floating at right about 1600 words now, and finalizing the article this week! Working on photo placement now. Are hyperlinks permitted (if we want to reference videos or build pages on our website)?

Absolutely! One of the benefits with going to an electronic SCR!

                    ...looking forward to your article...
