I did pick up a Spectra module, NIB , off of ebay.
Based on Kevin and Big Daves reccomendation, which I put a LOT of stock in, I am trolling ebay for a Futuba 9CAP to put it in. I intend to use a Sombra Labs RX, so I should be all the way good on that aspect. I may try a WFT-08 if I dont get a deal on a Futuba.
I am ordering another Spectra module tonight, so both boats in the future can be ran at the same time. The X tail Akula running guard for the Borei.
Thanks for the guidance. I hope more will chime in on this thread in the future to find/solve surface transmitter issues.

I have been using the Polk Tracker III for a few years; now for all my boats with the channel modulation. It's wonderful. Have had no trouble except didn't work real well with some Mtronic speed controllers. But swapped out to another Mtronic and worked fine.

I'm looking to buy a Futaba 9 CAP, too.
I notice that the ones for sale on EBay are for aircraft.
Can the radio software be changed for marine use or is it a matter of flicking a switch or can you download the marine software from the Internet?

I'm not aware of any radio that can switch from 72MHz to/from 75MHz with a switch, mechanical or software. Not saying it doesn't exist, but I've never seen one.

But all is not lost. Radios like that Futaba can be converted to 75MHz by a licensed FCC technician. Check out Radio South for an example of someplace that offers this surface.

Now if we're talking receivers, then the one I like and recommend is the Sombra Labs product. It's a synthesized receiver, meaning no crystals...you set the channel that you want. It can even 'learn' which channel to bind to.

Kevin said the Spectra module that is programmable for all surface channels, and is a drop in for a Futaba 9CAP. I hope he is right. I am buying all the way in on the idea. I now have two spectra modules that can adjust to any surface freq, and I am bidding on a 9CAP radio on ebay right now.
I went ahead and put in a high max bid in the one I want. It is 5 days from being done. So, be easy guys, I dont want to pay more than I have to.
I plan to get a second transmitter later so I may run both boats at the same time, which would be cool. Meanwhile, I want to try out this Futaba 9CAP.

Be sure and see it is a surface programmable one. There are also 2.4 and 72 MHZ modules.

Get a Sombra Labs RX, and you should be able to jump to any surface frequency in the field. Right? How cool is that?

I have two of the Spectra 75MHz modules and one Sombra Labs reciever.
Don't worry Wayne. I'm not ready to buy, yet.
From what the owners of the F-CAPs are telling me, the modules can be exchanged out.

Those Futaba radios that use a replaceable module are really nice. I used to use n 8UAF with the 75MHz module.

Speaking of the Sprectra module specifically yin 75MHz...if you know of one for sale, I'm looking for one.

Kevin speaks to what he uses - Spectra 75 module + Sombra Labs SL-8 receiver is an awesome combination, and you can drive it from a multitude of transmitters. Futaba 9Z (I have one of these), 9C, 8U, etc... WFLY WFT-08 (I have one of these too), as well as many other Futaba and Hitec transmitters will all take the Spectra.

Only aircraft.
No marine screens in any radio I know of.

I have had a Spectra on order from Toms for over a month.
He still hopes he can get one for me as Hitec does not make them any more. BD.

Dave, I have ordered seperately, and gotten both already, two Spectra's off of Ebay. Usually got them in a week's time. One of the sources I bought from is advertising another listing right now.
I am very pleased I got the help I did on this post, to guide me into a few good choices for a sub-capable 8 channel radio. Thanks guys, and especially Kevin. With the Sombra RX, I will be able to set to anything in the field. More than I hoped for, really.
Now, to get it wet
