    Sturgeon length question.

    hey guys,
On the Sturgeon class subs I was reading that the earily class hulls were "the Short" hull and the later "the long" hull. Couldn't find anything on what the diff. in length was. Anyone know off hand. Reason for asking is the hull I built came out about 1 1/2" too long in 1/72 scale. I went with the name and hull number of the Batfish 681, a longer hull version. thanks Jeff Jones

    Re: Sturgeon length question.

    Jeff,
The difference is 10 feet. The short hulls are 292 feet long and the long hulls are 302 feet. I built my 1/96 Sturgeon as the USS Batfish also. I did a mini over haul on her years ago when I worked for Electric Boat which is why I went with that boat. I got my hands on an old Thor hull and while I was rebuilding it into the Batfish I found out about the hull length difference. It was an interesting experience to cut the hull in half and add a section to make the length right.

Jeff, 10 feet would be 1.67in at 1/72 scale.
if interested pm me and I will send you a conversion spread sheet for the popular scales.
        Bob.

thanks Bob, thats great, so overall my hull for the sub I am doing turns out to only be oversize in length by about .100", I really lucked out, but its a 1 off only. Hope to see you guys at this years regatta. I need to renew my membership, being a former member for almost 15 years, do I still have to send in a membership application? thanks JEff Jones

It's a piece of cake to work out scales.

All you do is divide the scale into 12 e.g for 1/72 divide 12 by 72

Then with that figure (0.166) multiply it by the number of feet, in this case 10, which will give you 1.67" rounded up.
