1:9th scale marder midget "surface runner"

Starting a new semi scratch project this month. This should be a quick one because I am setting it up as a surface runner. I think it will be a blast at the local lake with just the clear hemisphere and drivers head showing. For the WTC, Big Dave set me up with a nice set of endcaps and tube. I plan on constructing a rack type system with 4/40 rods and G10 bulkheads. Motor is a speed 400 5 pole spinning one of the counter rotating screws. Not sure if I will freewheel the second or just leave it off when running. For the torpedo's, I am getting 2 of Bob's 1/9th scale jobs from the Seehund and Hecht models. I plan to scratch build the modifications to the torpedo using plastic, brass, aluminum and plex. The hemisphere will be vac-formed. I also plan to sculpt a driver as 1/9th scale figures are tough to find. All the electronics will be in the upper hull WTC. The lower will be reserved for ballasting weight. Yes, I did think about R/Cing the lower torp but want to keep this one simple.

How are you going to run the 2.4 antenna since they need line of sight and this boat is mostly sumberged?

      ....2.4GHz requires line-of-sight? I wasn't aware of that......

btw: are you looking to use 2.4GHz? I msut have missed that.

Look carefully at the receiver in the picture of the tech rack Jeff. Perhaps he's just using that as a guide for the lower frequency RX he will be using, unless they have 'special' water in California?

          Ahh...good spotting!

(but I think California does have special water... )

Everything is "special" here Jeff. Especially southern California Not going with the 2.4. Just using it as a mule for the electronics. Going through the junk piles to find a suitable 2 channel radio. Tube is now finished with the exception of the wiring and rudder linkage. Now, someone just needs to get to work and finish my hulls.......

Seems a shame to go to all that trouble and for the sake of one extra channel forsake the ability to take a dip beneath the surface.

Build a 1:9th scale bust figure for the hemisphere. Started with a head from a toy and added the body, helmet mask and details with wax. Got it as close as I could to the photo. Should look great out on the water.....

Good job posting your build. Keep it coming. Sometimes a surface runner becomes a dynamic diver with enough thrust.

                      Thanks,,,

Updated hose is much more realistic.......

As for the surface runner thing...This is my 11th operational "submarine" I have done 10 static systems already. I just wanted this one to be a simple, throw it in the back of the car model. The first version of this thing was only a surface runner anyways. Will look really cool with the hemisphere sticking out of the water hunting for targets....

Looks good. What kind of battery power are you going to use and where are you going to put the battery? Inquiring minds need to know?

Will be running a 2700 AA NIMH pack inside the WTC. The lower hull will only have lead in the bottom. Didn't want to deal with any external battery connections. Besides, there is plenty of room in the WTC..

Got the hulls and brass hardware today. As usual, everything from OTW is first class. Torpedo trigger and props are beautiful. Hulls have a nice flange going around them and some nice details in the molding. Built a stand and will start constructing the lower dummy first. Need to make an access hatch in the bottom to put ballast in it.

Are you going to make the props contrarotating?
You could fit something like this inside or outside your wtc.
