That's the "cutwater" at the base of the sail. I've seen the drawing that would also put one on 688's. THAT would be confusing!

Yes, Tim. Kevin Price has let me know that, and on the boats since Virginia this has not shown up.
The masters for this kit were all made off the Virginia when it was the only class boat, and the reference was very scarce.
But thanks for the information. I will say this is a pre-MIP boat.
