    First RC Sub Kit Recommendation(s)

So, I've done my research and ready to take the plunge (pun intended!).

I'm looking for recommendations: I'd prefer a kit as complete as possible ('not having to go to several different companies for additional 'parts', etc.).

    Size-wise I'd prefer a hull-length of 3' - 6'.

For my first model 'scale' is not an issue (I want to concentrate on learning - not scale details) but if there is a 'semi-scale' kit out there - I'd consider it based on the above.

If I knew what I was doing I'd want a scale Type VII, XXIII or Gato....

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

    Regards,

The Engel Lafayette might be a choice to consider. I've driven several submarines and it is one of the best handling submarines I've ever driven.

My first sub was the Robbe Seawolf.
Good size, good performance, good price.

Another possibility would be the robbe Type VII kit...or even the robbe Type XXI.

Caswell-Merriman 212 (a bit small for you, but don't discount a small submarine)
          TT Neptune. Totally complete.
RPM Tech Seehund. Again a very small boat, but very comprehensive.

If time isn't a big factor you can put a flier up on the SubSwap boards for a used Small World Models Blueback or Oyashio kit. They are a great way to get started in r/c subs. Though currently out of production, they came very complete with minimal finish work necessary to get running.

From strictly a kit standpoint, I had tremendous success with the Precision Pattern 1/96 Permit kit (ThorDesign at the time). It doesn't come with a WTC, but it has everything else you need and very thorough instructions. Ballast system vendors like Dave Welch make units that will work for the hull.

I've heard good things about them -- but haven't seen one first hand.

Just a note: the Thunder Tiger Neptune is a ready-to-run submarine......just charge the batteries and go! It even has a fully functional ballast system!

                        Jeff,

Has anyone written a review on it?

                          ...not that I recall.....

Perhaps Jim Butt can be convinced to do a write-up. Not only does he have one, but he's added some very nice LED lighting to his.

I'm not sure about the U.S, but here in the UK the Neptune comes in two varieties. Complete and ready to run, with a TX, RX, charger etc. and as a kit which includes everything except the Transmitter and receiver. If you have these already you will save yourself a few bob, which can go towards other things like a spare battery. Also it's worthwhile building it up yourself, as you'll learn how the boat goes together- subs are high maintenance vehicles, so it pays to know how things fit.

The good thing about the Neptune is that it goes together with a screwdriver- no glueing operations, filling- you don't even have to paint it, unless you want to.

There is also a lot of scope for modification in this vehicle.
