Hi guys
my ub88 is in the works. I will be doing a mold. with a mold you get a better finish. stay tuned. she is a beaut!! craig
And easier to cast a (extra) copy
Looks very nice, and great progress. Keep up the good work.
What scale is it, again?
Have you worked out all the "bits and pieces" on deck. What they are and what they do?
Hello Roffa
this is an on going search, now that I found one picture of the stern that answers some but not all my question, I am still trying to find more info. as for the deck. I have some great pictures thanks to Gary Fabian of ub88.org. once I get the hull done and molded I will go back to the plans and finish them. which means redoing my side views, adding more platelines ect. I am looking forward to all of this. the hull will be limber hole free Roffa. so if you find some good info you could build it as your grandfathers U-boat. that would make a great mantel piece!! so I could use all the help I can get on the stern. I have worked the net the best I can. still waiting to see if the archiv has anything. I will keep my fingers crossed. never went scale on this one. 55 inches what ever that works out to. it fits my van. all the best craig
Hi All
got to surfing agian. found this websight. the pictures are awesome. with these and the ones from Gary, I will be able to detail my model very nice. enjoy the pictures. these guys really shared some awesome pictures. have a great weekend Craig
Hi All
looks like I am doing one-offs. the little UB88 looked so good, I started two 83 inch UBIII's. I will do one UB88 and one late war UBIII which had a lot of limber holes, life boat on deck ect. there fun to build guy's. someone should do a kit?? not me tho. all the best craig
Your works looking good!
Couple of questions:
1) what tools are you forming your foam plugs with?
2) what technique are you using to get your left and right halves to match? pattern cutouts?
Hi Scott
all I do is copy the side view to cardboard showing all frame locations. draw this onto your foam sheet and cut as many layers as you need to make it as thick as your frame's. most times this is two to three layers. glue these together with elmers or epoxy. after that cut your frames out of plywood. for the 83 inch model I used 3/16 ply. tack glue these onto your foam blocks. ( three dots of epoxy) now you need to cut as much of the excess foam away. use a hot wire saw or any saw you have. from there make a block sander with 60 grit paper and plain the foam to shape. if you sand back and forth you can rip out chunks of foam. it will sand fast. the plywood guides make all this goof proof. easy and fun to do. for a filler use lite weight wall puddy. if you have more questions let me know. one offs are the only way to go. all the best craig
Thanks for the explanation. I see your frames and pieces of foam in the
picture now that you mention it.
Looking forward to the rest of the build.
I have a foam plug waiting to be worked on.
Now those odd shaped planes in the background look interesting.
Hi Scott
I do not think the rc sub guys will want me to post info on my stubby stuka and fatty p-40. so drop me a line at my email address and I will fill you in. you might want to checkout my 6ft Russian g-5 torpedo boat, another cool project. Craig cconeill@illinois.edu
