    1/32nd scale IXD2 U-181

alrighty ladies and gentelmen. im starting compleatly over from scratch on my IXD2 since i relised in my horor this afternoon that the frame lines i have are the wrong size! so.. i went back to the printer and scale my lines to the correct size. my first hull lines were 3/4 of an inch to small. so after doing the math, my hull will be around 9 3/8" wide and about a half inch short of 9 ft. does this sound right to any one else before i waste more foam? thanks!

    DK,

    Your numbers are very close.....

In 1/32nd scale a Type IXD2 would have a maximum beam of 9.227 inches and an LOA of 107.775 inches (8.98 feet).

well, ive roughed in part of the hull so far today. i know there are things to fix, im going to start on the bow right now. then ill smooth out the plug.

i have a 2 gallon kit of rebound 25 molding rubber and was thinking of detailing the plug, and making a mold... or should i lay the fiberglass on the plug (after sealing it), and detail the fiberglass hull?

lay glass up over the foam. Pull a quicky mold off of that. Lay up a really nice thick hull to detail up out of the quicky mold. Makes life a LOT easier. detailing raw glass layed up over foam can be very tricky. It is usually full of pores and filler. It is best to scribe and detail on a good surface or gel coat.

well! i don't know why i put this project off for 5 years. sheesh! in 2 days i have the hull roughed in. tomorrow i will finish the tip of the bow and the stern, then start sanding the rest of the hull and making the plug half way presentable.

are there frame lines for the late war IXC/IXD2 conning towers? if not, no biggie. i can do it with spare ABS i have here.

interesting hobby. what's the material you're using for the mask masters?

interesting critter in the background of the last shot. where'd you get that?

the critter is a stuffed animal i bought years ago as a present for my girlfriend. bought it in tennasee. im actualy building the whole suit from scratch. will be fiberglass for now for the suit, the helmet after i mold it will be cast in rotocast resin for weight. but the masters are a paper armature i assembled then fiberglassed. now im using bondo to fill, smooth and detail the masters.

make sure your plug is protected with a barrier before any resin is applied................... a MUST !!!

havent decided what to use to do that yet... ive seen the duct tape method, but was curious what other options there are.

If you use epoxy, no barrier coat is needed.
