    CHARGING BATTERIES

Hello from Madrid. Let me ask for your aid this nice snowy and chilly moorning about the power source for my SCALE SHIPS'S AKULA II: I'm going to use a 12 Volts, 16 Amp /hour composed by ten 1,2 V; 1600 mAmp /hour, like Wheelerdealer did for his. My doubt is about charging current and charging time. What amperage and how many time.
Thank you in advance for your aid.

    Re: CHARGING BATTERIES

You're using 1600mAh NiMh cells? They should be charged using a charger for NiMh batteries, which is designed to "peak detect" the battery charge cutoff. This will assure consistent and safe battery charges. Otherwise, charge at 1/10C (ie, 1/10 of 16 AH) or no more than 1.6 amps for ***15 hours***, as a general rule of thumb.

Wrong!!!! One hour or so at 1/10C is correct. I was thinking "overnight trickle charge". Thanks, SubCulture.

1.6 A for about 1 hour, Bill, surely.

Actually Andy I never charge my NiMh batteries at more than 1C or above unless I have too.
I have found they do not take high current charges as well and Nicad's or Lipo's.
You will not hurt them to do so but they will not take as high a charge capacity so run times are shorter.
A least that is what I have seen. BD.

          Neither do I. 1.6A is 1C.

            I know that. Ha!!
Even 1C is high for some NiMh.
It is usually OK for the low MA batteries like 1.2A down but higher output cells start to get upset!!
I have some 2.5A sells I use in my Gato and if I use 2.5A or 1C they time out quick on a charge.
If I use say 500MA to charge them they will take the entire 2.5A charge.
            Weird!! I know!
Have a great X-Mas holiday my friend!! BD.

I don't know now if they are NiMh or Nicad (just came down from my "shipyard" a moment ago and haven't checked it) Anyway, thank you all for your messages. I'll make different tests and see.

Actually, this is NOT "16 Amp" but rather 1.6 Amp. There's a big difference. Charging at the C/10 rate (recommended) would mean 160 mAh charging rate.
