    watertight box v watertight cylinder...

I’m wondering if any of you guys have built the Revell Gato with a watertight radio box and not a watertight cylinder? I mean a box similar to the one that the Robbe U-47 has?

I’m getting more than pi55ed off with trying to cram everything into a cylinder, it would be so much easier building everything into a full length, full width box…anybody used a box??

    I have used a box

I have used a box in several subs but found that they are more of a hassle to open and to keep a seal and they dont take pressure well as the top and bottom large serfaces flex inward and distort the inner workings causing motor shaft alighnemnt to even cause a bind!.Yes more space but if your sub is round to start it just makes better sense to put a tube inside of a tube its tighter but beter pressure wise and the less air in the WTC means less over all lead to counter ballance, and dry wieght.
The Robbe line of subs use one of the best examples of a tube WTC that is easy to open and give great acsses along with extreamly deep capabilities,a box will not.
Robbe has several WTC that you can buy seperatly and cut there lenghts to fit! See website.

    Just my opinion

Surely there must be some hope for a non circular Plexiglas WTC?

There are various models that have the WTC actually integrated into the hull.

I am just about to re-do my WTC and I would hate to need a third attempt. My Sierra will have a main drive, two thruster pumps, torpedoes, lights, ... And I just think I will run out of space getting all these things out of the endcaps of a cylindrical WTC.

Hmm. Two WTC. That could certainly ease the space issue.

I have been thinking about one long WTC that is 3.25" wide running most of the hull length, then having a ballast tank on each side. Just to be different.

On the WTC I would have several hatches. The design looks like:

There is a base plate with a 1/16" groove routed in it. I put a bead of silicone into this groove. Then there is the top plate. I use 1/2" aluminum C channel to clamp the two pieces together and squeeze the silicone seal.

I like the idea of the aluminum C channel - nice even pressure on the seal, and it's easy to open / close.

            Here is a prototype:

When I am done there will be aluminum around all four sides.

When I was making the silicone seal I used two strips of brass to ensure I had the correct height of silicone.

It sure looks like it has a good seal.

I keep re-reading Dave and Steve's comments and thinking "if they had trouble what are the chances this is going to work..."

One main ballast tank will make it much simpler to ballast. Two may be a headache for you.

It ain't broke! (Or for the purists of the English language, " It isn't broken!")

WTCs, a name coined by David Merriman, and his ultimate 'Sub-driver' have consistently outperformed the 'box'. It is almost extinct.

I didn't see anything wrong with Tony G.'s post that was removed. He was expressing an opinion that there were some biased inaccuracies in a prior post, if I am not mistaken. What was the censor's reason for removing his post?

It truly saddens me to see where this website has gone. A post pulled because the word “bull” was used? Come on, let’s get real here folks. To see the world’s leading r/c submarine organization’s website become scared to death of anything that can be conceived as “inflammatory” is carrying political correctness to such a ridiculous degree is heart breaking, to say the least. And why is this happening? Because mike caswell decided that he didn’t want the truth to be known so he threatened to sue.....knowing full well that he couldn’t win in a court of law but knowing just as well that he COULD instill the fear of God. What have we come to?

                          Skip Asay

Sorry guys. For the first time ever, I've edited one of my posts.
