I heard there were a few articles on missile launching systems for my ICBM and was wondering if anyone could direct me twords them.

I heard there was an article called "launch this" by possible Mike Dory.

The article I just read was very good. The only thing i think it is missing is how he got that rod to hold the gas in with no seal.

Torpedoes

The Torpedoes all have a teflon plug incert in the rear end with a 30.000 th. hole drill through the teflon. This hole is then filled by a 32000th drill bit that is attached to the nyrod and connected to a servo. Hope this helps some. ... Best Wishes Mike Dory

the article says he used a 1/16" hole as a nozzle port, are you saying it was even smaller? I think I have my design fully chopped up in my head but if I can save time thats good 2.

Well I had a 9

Well I had a 9 hr drive home yesterday and I spent nearly all of it prototyping my missile system in my head and I think Ive come up with a system that perks my interest sufficiently.

Now in the article I read a mechanical pull pin was used to unstop the missile for launch. This also required an external protrusion on the bottom so there would be room to pull the pin completely out.

Now the mechanical pull pin system works but, I want this think to kind of operate like the real thing. So, I have to step it up a notch. The real missiles are launched using steam like a pop gun.

My first idea was to create a series of 3 ring seals in the tube and make a small burn chamber to the side with a "A" size estes rocket motor in is that would fire onto a small chamber filled with water. Now this seemed like the option with the highest cool factor but, not very practical and expensive. I also could not remember if those things had self oxidizers like magnesium or aluminum oxide. If they didnt I would never get a full burn or if I got to big an angle the mote would get wet and be worthless. Another issue I saw was that once the missile cleared the surface It might fly a foot in the air and then abruptly stop without its own power system.
So I am now on version 4 or so and here is what i have.



I wanted to keep the idea of a gas assisted launch system but my only concern now is will the propel have the proper pressure to "pop" my missile of its seal pin?

I'm sure it will come as no surprise that I've been thinking of similar systems for the Granit launcher for my OSCAR II (or for an SS-N-23 launcher for a Delta IV)...

With respect to your launch tube, I believe I see what you're trying to accomplish with the two guide rings around missile body, but consider the possibility that the missile could become mis-aligned after it looses contact with the lower ring (which will happen almost immediately), resulting in anything from poor launch velocity to a hung missile. What if you were to use three or four vertical guide rails on the inside of the launch tube above the sealed resin ring to keep the missile aligned with the center of your launch tube- minimizing the drag on the skin of the missile as it leaves your launch tube but ensuring that its trajectory is straight out of the launch tube?

I don't honestly know if the above is really something that needs to be worried about, it's just a thought. YMMV...

I thought about this as well. I will just have to see what happens when i build my test bed. I will of course post my results.

Kevin have you made your linkages for the missile doors yet. Seeing how you are with linkages it would be interesting to see what your doing. I have a very simple set up in mind but I am held back because I want to retain the look of the real thing.
