Type VII B or C rear torpedo tube hatch

    Hello !!!
I saw many photos and drawings of stern torpedo tube, and I can´t find or see any photo showing an open hatch. Also I saw a drawing of the same stern torpedo tube hatch from book Vom Original zum Modell, but I don´t understand it. Somebody can help me to understand this mechanism or show me the open hatch?
    Thanks in advance.
    Gonzalo.

    Hi Gonzalo,

Yea.....a photo of an open stern tube door would be a great find!

I assume the photo of the stern tube you are referring to in VOZM is this one?

Based on the excellent Fritz Köhl drawings, we can see that the inner stern tube door open upwards. Typical practice is/was to use a mechanical linkage to connect the tube door to the outer door....so that both open at the same time. This would mean that the stern outer door would need to be hinged at the top, rear and swing upwards.

Here's an extract of the relevant drawing:

    -hope this helps,

      Yes, it´s the photo and

Yes, it´s the photo and drawing. But still I don´t understand. Like type IX, there are two hatches, in this case I understand how works the mechanism. But it´s not clear in type VII submarine.

I believe that the VII stern tube doors work exactly the same way as the IX, except that it moves up/down instead of sideways......so if you're good with how the IX works, you've got the VII?

I don´t know because the external hatch shape it`s very difficult to understand. There is another drawing in the same book, I guess on page 37.
It´s better if there is a 3D drawing or photo of open hatch.
I think that this mechanism may be similar to type IX.
I know that it moves up/down because drawing.
Looking for a close photo, I can see 2 lines.
          Thanks

            Hi Gonzalo,

I think I have found the drawing that you mean - it is on page 34.
This is how I see the opening mechanism - the outer cover is firmly mounted to the inner hatch and opens & closes with it. From the outside, it will probably look like a parrot opening its beak.
Sorry for the bad colouring in the drawing - red is closed, green is open.

            Regards
            Harald

              That diagram on page 34

That diagram on page 34 is definitely the key to understanding the mechanism....I had forgotten that it was in the VOZM book. Many thanks for digging that out, Harald!

Yes, it´s on page 34. I will draw a hand made 3D drawing to show here. May be that we will see better this mechanism and agree if it´s logical my view points.
                Thanks.
