2 motor on a single prop shaft

I noticed in the Beluga building thread http://projekt1710.com/index_e.asp

the builder is using 2 motors coupled to a single prop shaft. Well other than have a spare motor to turn your prop in case 1 motor burnout what is the advantages/disadvantages of using such a set-up?

      Two motors driving a single

Two motors driving a single prop would appear to be not only unnecessary but likely to cause problems....unless both motors performed exactly the same, as in synchronized. Otherwise one of the motors is going to be a drag on the other.

I think he's only going for the twin motors if the single motor doesn't give him enough power. Seems like a simpler solution would be to use a more powerful, single motor.......

        I do not see any

I do not see any two motors installed.
I do see two compressors being used, and a discussion whether one motor will be enough (powerwise).

These guys know what they are doing (unlike me ) so I am certain that
IF they use two motors, that it will perform marvellously. but I expect them to try out a single motor config first. given the shape, it will be hellishly fast
        anyway...

          Ronald,

          But aren't the motors slaved

          Ronald,

But aren't the motors slaved together with a single timing belt? If I've got that right, my original concerns would still seem to apply.....

            Jeff I think what your

Jeff I think what your confusing is that this is their new "standard" WTC design and they have built in the option for 2 motors/props. From the previous subs these guys have built they are an engineering masterclass so they will know what they are doing !!

              Hi Davie,

              That's what I was

              Hi Davie,

That's what I was originally thinking, but the following text is then confusing:

"During the planning phase of the drive propulsion system, I've noticed that we should run into a problem with the main holder plate, because we don't know yet which configuration we will use later. The question is: is one motor enough? The conversion should be as easy as possible, if we realize that we have to use two motors."

Assuming that he is referring to his Beluga project, he's only going to be running a single prop......?

                I missed that bit ,

I missed that bit , I guess it gives them options to double the motor size provided they make sure the motors are matched properly there shouldn't be too many problems. I think they may even have custom made motors in their subs but would need to check.

                  Still think a single, more

Still think a single, more powerful motor would be a better solution.

                    Two motors on one shaft

Hi Guy's, I can recall the plans for the 32P. Gato class, fleet boats. These planes, called for hooking up two Dumas motors per shaft on a direct drive. that hook up system seemed to have worked very well. I, always thought this took up a lot of space, but that was just my thoughts about it. You can't argue with seccess, I guess. See you at the regatta, Best Wishes....... Mike Dory
