    Modified Robbe U-31/32

    My lattest creation

I went way off the manuefactures manual on this one as she is intendid to be a dynamic diver and that had to change. This sub is too nice and large to do just that.

First I noticed that the long cylindrical wtc was too long ,since it would take 18 ponds to dive!
Lead bars have to be perchased seperatly for this and I decieded to convert that to battery power. Two 8.0 amp hour 12 volt batteries instead of 2 6 volt ones where installed.
This made up for some of the weght, then I shortened the wtc some 8 inches, and that did the job!

In the pictures is the ballast tank that has baffles that are not glued in place but held there with a single stinless steel threaded rod and nuts to keep the round plastic baffles in place, very siple and I wich I had done it that way before.

The diving system is of the water pump desighne, but I dont know if this particular way has been used before if not then its a first.

The tank is not pressureized which was a drawback to the pump systems as high pressure and also vacume formed at each cycle of the diving process and solinoid valves ect. had to be used to control water from draining the tank or flooding it.

This system is similar to the "Snort " but the venting of the tank is different in this one since the pressure hull is the resevoir of air used to compensate for the vacume produced on pumpout and a solinoid valve for venting the wtc on the serface. Also on pump out the vacume is drawn from the lowest aft area of the wtc that way if any water should enter the wtc it will be drawn into the ballast tank and one way valve prevents any back flow.Filters are also fitted to prevent any valve or pump malfuntions, mostly regular fuel line filters from atomotive to RC aircraft systems are used, see photos.
The pump is the star of the hole thing its a windshield washer gear pump that comes fully surpresed and can self prime and run shortly dry.Its also very inexpensive and has plenty of volume and pressere, also does not use alot of power and runs cool. All the atributes needed to make a great water pump for a ballast system.

The volume of water it pumps out and in is about a leter and a quarter and does this in about 2 minutes per cycle!Just right to be scale like.

Also this system alows for the preciese control of the amount of water in the tank and a "hover" can easily be acheived.
Also using the same type of pump is the hydraulic ballancing system,6 syriges 2 in the stern and 4 smaller ones connected together and filled with water at one end when pumped will shift the ballance of the sub from aft to stern just enogh in a hover, those syringes make excelent trim tanks, like small hydraulic Engel pumps.
Comes in handy where the pond water is more or less boyant than other ponds and serface trim.

The drive also must be perchased seperatly and is not cheap ,so I installed a Dewalt cordless drill motor/trany that is planetary and has built in thrust bearrings for 40.00$ new and water cooled it via the main shaft as seen in the pictures, the external coil is the exchanger for the main drive.
Masts also retract useing legos and a gutted wet servo.

The total cost of the ballast system was about 70.00$ verses 300.00$ for a Engel pump that as stated did not staticly dive the sub,the wtc is too large and the Engle pump is too small.
The stainless steel 5.5 inch prop had to be made seperatly and was ordered from Andreas of Germany and yes it will chop wood and even mow the grass!

This sub is highly recomened and thogh the acessories are not recomended they can be subsituted for a better over all performance.
She will cruise for 2 hours.

The tail is very accessable with 3 screws off it comes and the wtc chekked for leaks is a snap as are the stern planes acsessabilty.
I also suggest that the stand be reinforced with foam and a bored be glued to the bottom, felt also prvents scratches.
I also scribbed the hull as only the limber holes are cnc cut.
This sub also has retractable cleats that are hydraulic like the real thing, and I will post on how to make them.
Well enjoy the pictures and dont hesitate to ask questions.

      Very nice effort! Looks well

Very nice effort! Looks well trimmed and like she should perform very well. Are you using a leveller for the X tail? Whats the turning circle like?

        Thank you! Yes she dose

Thank you! Yes she dose performe very well serfaced as well as submerged, and I dont use a leveler at all just carefull sub driving.

She turns incredibly sharp ,within 4 ft radius or less, due to 4 planes in the water versus one and a partial on most nukes.

The sail is a bit large and at high speed dived she will nose dive a bit like the SkipJack, but not bad.

Fun great model large without being too large, very strong construction thogh you would not think so out of the box being made of PVC.The ribs are very thick and well made as is the single 5mm bolt used to seal the wtc.

Also no screws are visable from the top or sides interlocking legoes hold the sail in place and a special one way button holds the nose on and comes off with a pair of pliers.
When assembled I used 3 hour epoxy and when set a coat of Goop and another sheet of PVC on top of that at the hull halfs.
The ribbs are Gooped in and that way kept slightly flexable.Like a monocoke aircraft wing its verry strong.
Ballancing foam and lead are inbetween the outer and inner hulls, and the WTC can be easily removed to add or remove as needed the above in a twist lock fachion I made.
I am currently finishing up on an Engle Masters Typhoon and will be running alfa trils soon. Will post!

        Thanks Dave Amur Ship Yard
