I have a type XXIII, was there a wood/? deck grating fitted on the bow section, starting at the tower and ending just forward of the bow planes area?

I am not Jeff, but: there was. It was a temporary wooden structure used in-harbour so that people could walk the deck better.

Yup...essentially three long planks along to foreward top of the hull.
