Painting Brass Props

Hey all,

What's the general consensus on painting brass props ?

I'm very hesitant to paint my nice brass props because I suspect they would constantly be chipping, making them either look bad, or be a pain to keep touching up. I'm thinking I'm just going to leave the props unpainted brass.

Is there a method or product that works for painting brass props so that they will stay painted.

I bead blasted mine with the finnest grit i could buy and used a low airpressure setting. it looks great now that its been in the water a few times. no need to weather or paint.

Never thought of that. Do you own your own bead blaster ? If so, where did you get it and how much ?

You could always coat them

You could always coat them in polyurethane varnish.

The etching solution I used

The etching solution I used for my white metal parts (avalible from radio shack) looks like it may work. I have not tried it on brass yet. It works very well on white metal to etch for adhesion for paint.
I have pictures of the stuuf in the Seawolf build link where I used it on the jumper linkages and impellor.
Cannot say for sure on brass though. I don's see why not. Once etched, then prime and paint.

Fishing boat props are Phosphor

Fishing boat props are Phosphor Bronze and when new are very shiney but when they have been in use for a month or so are dulled and barely look Bronze at all

I don't paint them...don't see the need to. They look just about right once they have had a chance to weather slightly.

Is there something specific that you are looking to do by painting them?
