Revell uboat rear planes

Hello all,

How have all you Revell uboat builders got over the very tight space in the rear to operate the rear planes. Pictures would be nice as I am all out of ideas.

I'm not sure how

I'm not sure how 1:72 Revell builders do it. It was all I could do to squeeze the mechanical components into the stern to operate the stern planes on my 1:25 VIIc/41, and it is 3X the size of a Revell. I would suspect that the aft planes on a 1:72 Revell r/c boat are NOT operational......just a guess.

before glueing the two hull

before glueing the two hull halves together open up the recess in the area where the planes are hinged. I used some 1/8" tubing and soldered a thin brass piece to it, about 1.25" long. The control arms will push and pull this backwards and forwards to rotate the planes. The kit planes shafts fit nicely into the tube and can be glued in, but not yet. Cut two small pices of tubing that the 1/8" pice can rotate in and glue these into the hull. I made mine about3/16" long and then build up up (non scale) putty around them in small dome so they wont easily break off. assmeble the hull with your 1/8" brass tube sandwiched in there. The arm should be free to move the tube and at a later stage you can glue on the planes. I would leave this till very late on to avoid snapping them off. I am presently at the stage of making some brass arms to support the outisde of the planes, my a frame is already brass, right going down stairs now to profile them

Scott whilst the Gato information is good, the stern planes on the Gato are very different to the Type VII.
