    O-Ring material

What is the recommended o-ring material? Silicone, Buna-N, Polyurethane?

    Most of us use Nitrile,

Most of us use Nitrile, which I believe is marketed under the tradename of buna-N in the U.S.

Silicone o-rings can be a little bit fragile, and polyurethane can be a bit too stiff.

There are some other materials out there used to make o-rings, e.g EPDM and Viton and these are used in applications where the o-ring might be attacked by chemicals i.e. fuel(gas) and various chlorinated chemicals. These tend to be used a lot in the car and aerospace industries.

These o-rings tend to be much more expensive, but may be worth considering if you run your sub a lot in chlorinated water- chlorine tends to attack nitrile, although the affects of this can be greatly alleviated by smearing your nitrile rings with silicone grease.

Vaseline grease should be avoided. This can attack nitrile as it's a petroleum derived product, but would probably be okay on other o-ring materials.

    Lots of info here-

      for quick material reference, like

for quick material reference, like on o-rings, i like to go to www.mcmaster.com and type in o-rings in the search block. pretty nifty for finding out standard size tubes for WTCs and other raw materials.
