I built one of those waaaaay back. Lots of work, but lots of fun also. I did it exactly as the instructions said. If I were doing it again, I'd for sure make the following changes:
Glass the outside of the hull, maybe the inside also.
Use 1/8" prop shafts running in sealed tubes, not the grease filled stuffing tubes. (yuck)
Use 1/4" lexan for the hatch
Use a real speed controller, not microswitches.
Depending on your experience, I'd also consider using smaller, high capacity batteries freeing up internal space. That would allow another servo for the actuation of the stern planes, and maybe even a small piston type ballast tank.
