    parastolic pump - pump

Has any one tried using a parostolic pump and in a closed system with no vent too the tank.?
The only thing that it may need is a pressure switch too cut out and in too prevent over pressureization.
If this will work it may be a viable alternative too gas or centrifical pumps that require a vent.

    Hi Rick,

I have heard of this being done.....can't quite remember who did it, however.

The idea of a closed system using a (air or water) pump definitely works. The dive modules offered by OTW use this same principle.

      Hello all,

      I've discussed a lot

      Hello all,

I've discussed a lot on closed loop ballast system on another sub forum...it's used in Sheerline model submarines(United Kingdom), and it works really well.
In Sheerline's design a pressure switch is not needed because the tank is strong and sealed enough to withinstand the water pressure of the working pump.
The only thing is that the pump doesn't automatically shut off-but it must not be an issue, because, as some English told me, when the periscope of the boat are under there's no point in keeping operational the pump.
The pressure switch would be a good idea as auto-stop device.
Howewer I don't have a Sheerline sub...I simply discussed the pro and cons of this ballast system with people that have a Sheerline model!

        Hi Rick
Francis Fearn used one in his Delta research sub. If you go to www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/ and then to "Your Models" you should find it. It works perfectly and won a Gold at the London Engineering Show earlier this year.

                    Gents,
                    The Recirculating Compressed Air Ballast

                    Gents,
The Recirculating Compressed Air Ballast System is a CLOSED system that uses an on-board air compressor (pump) to inflate a Neoprene bladder. This forces water out of the wet hull, and is reversible, to adjust buoyancy.
See descriptive article and pictures at]Art Broder's Models[/url] and click on ballast system, docs and pictures.
The 6-12V pumps and Neoprene bladders are available for purchase on-line.

                      I am (still) working on

I am (still) working on my FX Alvin.I have tested a pump which came with my Sheerline dive system, however pressure was too low and it could only fill 50-60% of closed tank volume.

Next I bought geared (fuel) pump for r/c planes and it fills 80% of tank volume.
                      http://www.hobby-lobby.com/fuelpump.htm (HLFK190)
I've heard that this pump isn't tough enough for continuous use,but in my setup,so far so good.

                      My setup is;
                      (pump)-(1way valve)-(closed tank)-(solenoid blow valve)
solenoid valve is McMaster #7877K55 or K25.Pump and solenoid valve are controlled by Subtec SES-2.

Art, I've been looking at your ballast system. The neoprene bags might be something I could very well use in my pump ballast system. What are they used for exactly. I understand that they are for medical purposes. Maybe my wife (nurse) can get her hands on a couple of them.

                          Koeze, and other modelers,
                          The replacement

                          Koeze, and other modelers,
The replacement bladders are used in the arm cuff of a sphygmomanometer(blood pressure device). The kind to use for model use is the Neoprene bladder. The ones that come in the blood pressure monitors are now thin plastic, and do not have the strength nor the elasticity needed for our purposes. Internet sources are , AllHeart.com , or SafetyStore.
Also, the source for the small air compressor(pump) is , Goldmine-elec.com. Search for air pumps.
Hope this helps you and others who may be interested in RCABS. (Recirculating Compressed Air Ballast System)

                              Hi Andy ,
                              That pump you

                              Hi Andy ,
That pump you located at goldmine-electronics is a small
air pump , it would be ideal for filling a flooded ballast tank
with air to remove the water.
The peristaltic pumps would be used to pump water into a
sealed ballast tank . Normally the peristaltic pump has a rotor
with 3 fingers , the rotor spins and the fingers are in contact
with a rubber hose , as the rotor spins the hose is
compressed forcing the water in the hose to travel in the
direction of rotation , this rotation also causes suction to
build inside the hose pulling the water in behind eash finger
                              on the rotor .
The problems with this pump is the wear caused on the hose
from the fingers rubbing it and compressing it .
There is some hose out there someplace that can be used
with this pump , however I do not know what type of hose
that would be or where to get it ....
Does anyone have this information ?
