Part time ESC

Hello all,

I have a GWS aircraft type speed controller. (GWS GS-100)

It's for a brushed motor. Sometimes It works really well. Performs beautifully, and other times it decides to take a holiday. It's about 60% reliable. I'm scrating my head, and trying to think of things that could be affecting it. It works beautifully, ....only half the time....

It is placed right next to a failsafe ( CAR type) It is mounted right next to it. Could this be interfering in some way? I've checked every other connection and they all seem to be good. Does anybody have any other more detailed info on this speed controller other than what's on the GWS website and on the back of the pack.

I'd be very surprised indeed

I'd be very surprised indeed if the failsafe is causing any problems.

Perhaps you have a dry joint on the ESC board, or maybe one of the components is a bit duff.

Could be any number of things, and it's very tough to diagnose this sort of thing without having it in front of you .

do you have any of

do you have any of these tools, a volt meter, servo tester, a "Y" cable and a 4 cells pack.

part time esc or any electronics no fun.
how small is your motor? (over heat cut off, friction in drive system)
did you have cap on the motor?
bad wiring or lose connection.
bec not working, this is the 4 cells pack use for.

You didnt describe exactly how its taking a holiday. Is it operating just fine and in the middle of operating does it go out, or when you first fire up the radio , it wont work.If it is the latter I have experienced that before many times. Some speed controls have a safety feature that wont allow it to operate unless its first at nuetral. Well this hitek speed control is really picky about it. sometimes it takes slowly moving the joystick back and forth many times before it decides to start working, and then sometimes it wont work. Wait a couple of days and then it works fine. I bought two of them and have retired both of them for the same reason. If thats not the case buy or borrow another one, install it and see if your problem doesnt go away.

O.K I'm running 2 sealed lead Acid Batteries 6V 1.3Ah in series. 12V to
the pump and 6V to the radio gear.

I replaced some wiring this afternoon and this has made the unit start up from zero throttle almost every time. However it has developed this annoying habit now of running up , usually to about 30-40% for 5-6 seconds and then abruptly cutting out.I have to once again go back to zero throttle setting for it to repeat this cutting out. Sometimes I can run almost up to full throttle but then it will usually cut out again.

This happens underwater. However she seems to be behaving herself on the surface of out of the water, she performs perfectly on the test bench no cutting out what so ever. Could it be resistance? Could it be some sort of overlead.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

are you try to use 12v or 6v, motor size and pop size?
what type of sub you have, how big?
2 feet long sub?

your set up work on the banch.
but when you put the sub in the water, the water will load up the pop, the bec will cut out/ over heat.

The motor is a

Hello,

The motor is a can type RE-380 Brushed motor direct shaft . It runs off 2, 6V SLA's ( In series 12V to pump , 6V to RC gear and ESC) The prop is about 30mm dia and the boat is about 850 mm long. Gotland Class.

Are you running a BEC

Are you running a BEC on this ESC? A lot of BEC's (i.e. most that I've encountered) don't like running on 6 volts.

The reason for this, is that they are usually based around a linear regulator IC, and unless it's of the low dropout variety, these need a couple of volts over and above the required regulated voltage i.e. 7 volts in for 5 volts out.

may be you could try this, remove the red wire at the connector(BEC 5v and don't cut it just tape it for now) from the ESC.

supply the 6V from the motor battery to the Rx to see any thing change for the good.
