Verne-style NAUTILUS almost done!!!

It has been a long time since I started this one. Maybe more than two years --- I don't know.

Anyway. The NAUTILUS has been an obsession of mine since the 4th grade and that is THIRTY SEVEN YEARS! A long time to dream of building what I imagined in my head.

I have a 1/350 Verne Nautilus in the works myself, based on two drop tanks from a 1/48 C-130 Hercules kit.
I see you have chosen the "ram higher than centreline" path based on the location of the hole in the ship and Nemo's tale of the event... I have disregarded that part, I am doing the classic centreline ram.

I will get back to it after I finish this one.

Since this is a kitbash it is a random scale. The NAUTILUS' diameter of 8 meters combined with the diameter of the X-1 kit made this bash a 187 scale model.

I just installed two anchors fore and aft yesterday. They were never mentioned in the novel and hardly mentioned at all in connection with submarines but we all know they have them.

How are going to do the Salon window?

I found a PVC pipe with the right inner diameter and shoved it through the hull. Once I had it where I wanted it, I glued it in with CA and covered the seam with putty and sanded it smooth. I have a couple of "Google" eyes like the sort glued onto Teddy Bears that are just right for the windows. Once I get the model painted I will glue them in and call it done.

As to your question above (sorry to be so late in answering), I plan to cut rectangles from the hull, fill them with windows from 2 mm clear polystyrene (got a big sheet from a gardening store once) a little larger than needed, sand & polish to shape, and hide the border between transparent/nontransparent styrene below the hull paint. My only concern is that 2 mm might not be thick enough to cover the hull curvature.

You might try placing a thicker piece of plexiglass where you want the windows and sanding them curved.

At 350 scale I figured transparency to be "guilding the turd" so I just laminated squares of plastic card together. The top three or so had the window cut out of them which put the window "pane" at the right depth. Then I sanded down the laminated blocks to meet the curve of the hull. Voila! I have the Salon windows just where I want them.

For my 187th scale N, I was lucky to find ready made materials. When I finish (haven't started yet . . . ) painting, I hope to put a figure or two behind the windows to give a sense of scale. There will be no lights inside so I won't both bother with a lot of detail which won't be seen anyway.
